Preparation and loadout
Rangifer is the first mandatory Nushi and the fight is designed to test the fundamentals that ordinary Golems introduce: reading a complete animation, defending before attacking, and converting a stagger into damage. Flame is the best-supported weakness for the Ogouchi encounter. Equip any reliable Flame source you have unlocked, but do not sacrifice a familiar weapon simply to force an elemental setup. A consistently timed sword string is more valuable than a nominal weakness that causes you to miss the recovery window.
Rest before entering the lair, refill ranged ammunition, and spend any available skill points. Helm Splitter is useful after a clean opening, while Attack Dog or another short Koo command can continue pressure without locking Emma into a long animation. Keep at least one healing option available for the second half. The later Matsukawa Shrine rematch is substantially stronger and is reported with Lightning support rather than the opening fight's Flame weakness, so treat it as a separate build check even though both encounters live on this page.
Reading the antlers and charge
Stay at a middle distance where Rangifer's head, front legs, and antlers remain visible. Standing directly beneath the body makes the first movement difficult to read; retreating too far encourages repeated charges and wastes the opening created when they finish. The safest early damage comes after a committed forward rush or a broad antler sequence. Move across the path of the charge, allow the full motion to finish, then approach from the flank for a short sword string.
Do not automatically extend every punish into Helm Splitter. Use one or two quick hits first and watch the shoulders. If Rangifer is already turning, cancel the idea and defend. When the boss remains planted or Koo has created entanglement, commit the heavier skill. Parrying is worthwhile only after you recognize the rhythm; a late defensive input against a charging body can cost most of an early health bar. Dodging across the attack is the more repeatable learning tool.
Second-half plan
As the fight accelerates, Rangifer chains movement more readily and gives less time to repair a bad camera angle. Recenter after every pass instead of chasing directly behind it. Ranged Flame pressure is useful during these resets because it keeps buildup moving without placing Emma in front of the antlers. Koo's commands should support a confirmed opening, not be fired blindly while the Nushi is already leaving their area.
When entanglement or stagger holds Rangifer in place, move to the side of the front legs and spend your best compact damage. Save the longest sequence for a full down state. If the boss raises its head while Emma is still attacking, disengage rather than gambling on the final hit. The encounter becomes reliable when every cycle follows the same order: regain sight of the head, evade the committed attack, apply a short punish, and reset before the turn.
Common failures and the rematch
Most failed attempts come from following the boss into the arena edge, healing while it is aligned for another charge, or spending both Emma's and Koo's long actions at the same time. Heal only after Rangifer has crossed the arena or completed a long animation. Keep the fight away from walls so lateral movement remains available. If the camera loses the antlers, stop attacking and move back into open ground.
For the level 40 Matsukawa Shrine rematch, retain the same movement discipline but arrive with upgraded defenses and a tested Lightning option. Do not assume the first encounter's Flame setup remains optimal. The rematch punishes greed much more severely, so shorten ordinary punishes and reserve the full skill rotation for a true stagger. Numeric New Game Plus changes are not separate monsters; the same plan applies, with additional emphasis on avoiding damage instead of trading.
